Private Joker's rifle jamming at the worst possible time is historically accurate. The M-16 was the new standard issue rifle used in the Vietnam War, but it quickly became infamous because the rifle action would jam, meaning the firing mechanism would lock up. This was due to the U.S. Army's change from IMR 4475 ("improved military rifle") to a spherical ball powder. Ball powder burns faster than IMR powder and leaved more fouling. Also, ball powder made the firing mechanism too fast. This, combined with the fact that the rifles were not issued with cleaning kits (IMR powder was a much much cleaner powder), caused the rifle's firing mechanism to jam to the point a full field strip would be needed to get the rifle to fire. This was a major problem during firefights, when US forces were unable to return fire at Vietcong forces who were using the much more reliable AK-47. This problem was solved in the late 1960s when cleaning kits were issued.
