Several times, Mr. Miyagi corrects Daniel's pronunciations of "bonsai" and "banzai" which Daniel understandably confuses. "Bonsai", meaning "tray planting", is the art of making a miniature tree in a container, and comes from the Chinese term "penzai", which has the same meaning. "Banzai", meaning "hurrah", (literally, "ten thousand years", that is, "long life") also comes originally from Chinese and is equivalent to the modern Mandarin term "wansui".
