The character of Mon-El, introduced in the second season, was originally a mysterious space explorer that crash landed on Earth without his memories. Since he had Kryptonian abilities and was found on a Monday, Superboy dubbed him Mon-El. It was later discovered that Mon-El had a hyper-sensitivity to lead poisoning, and after a fatal exposure, Superboy was forced to exile his friend to the Phantom Zone to save his life. 1000 years later, the Legion of Superheroes were able to release Mon-El and cure his lead poisoning, and he was reunited with Superboy and Supergirl when they time-traveled to the future and joined the Legion. In the comics, Mon El's real name is Lar Gand, and he does not have a romantic relationship with Supergirl. Rather, the Legion member who saved him, Brainiac 5, is Supergirl's love interest.
