CGI was used very sparingly in this production. It was used in one scene where the workers are dragged out of a building and the woman close to Szpilman is shot point blank in the head for asking where they are being taken. CGI had to be used for this scene to imitate the muzzle flash as it was far too dangerous to film it with a real blank round discharging that close to a real person. Other examples of CGI include Szpilman climbing over the wall after fleeing the deserted hospital only to see destroyed buildings as far as the eye can see, and Adrien Brody's nose was given a slight orange glow as he lays the piano for the German officer towards the end of the film. The film's director of photography had filmed many scenes with a subdued color palette and director Roman Polanski wanted to bring a slight touch of warmth to that scene to show the life in Szpilman still being there when he starts to play again.
