The show is rigidly scripted. Many of the cast members, including John Belushi, Jim Belushi, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, and Eddie Murphy, are famous for improvising their lines in performances. Lorne Michael actually frowned upon improvisation during SNL for the simple reason that it was broadcast live and changing lines could disrupt the performance. He has been known to chastise cast members who took it too far.
