To get into character as a military journalist, Matthew Modine would bring a notepad and camera, and write down and photograph the things he experienced on set. Director Stanley Kubrick encouraged him in this, and frequently asked him to read his diary aloud on set. Modine would later use the notes as the basis of his memoirs, "Full Metal Jacket Diary".
