The original book of Jules Verne's "The Mysterious Island," had many sketches. One was of the island that the colonists landed on. The wayfarers named it Lincoln Island after US President Abraham Lincoln. The sketch is interesting and showing an odd shaped island. It is in the shape of a large bird's head with jaw wide open, and then a slender tail that tails off of the head. It faces right (East) and is about 30 miles long from tail to nose tip. The wide open beak has a small peninsula that resembles a tongue, and a small islet just off the shore which is the back of the mouth. The volcano is at the crown of the head. The tail gets progressively thinner, from about five miles at the neck from the head, gradually down to less than a mile at the end. The distance across the open jaw is about thirteen miles; from the tip of the top beak to the volcano, about twelve miles; from the bottom beak tip to the volcano, about sixteen miles; and from the beach in the open jaw to the coastline behind the volcano, about eight miles. It's about two hundred square miles of land; realistic enough to have rock cliffs, a rushing stream or river or two, forests, and swamps. Another way to visualize it is as a huge snake head with a very small, thin body.
