Tom Hardy personally chose Andy Serkis to direct, having called him on the phone totally out of the blue to ask him to direct the sequel. The choice made perfect sense, as Serkis has been directing heavily CGI-laden movies for a while, including Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle (2018), and he was the second unit director on the Hobbit movies.
