Prior to being offered the role of Jessica, Lansbury was offered the chance to appear in a sitcom. However, her manager suggested she not take that role and do a drama instead. A year after MSW debuted on CBS, the proposed sitcom that had been offered to Lansbury debuted on NBC. That show was the hugely successful Cuori senza età (1985). Interestingly, starring in that show in the role of Dorothy was her best friend Bea Arthur. Arthur never appeared on MSW and Lansbury never appeared on Cuori senza età (1985), probably because the shows were on different networks in an intensely competitive era.
