Series creator Peter Morgan has previously worked on projects about Queen Elizabeth II's later life. His screenplay for The Queen - La regina (2006), which detailed the monarch's reaction to the death of Princess Diana, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and starred Dame Helen Mirren in the title role. In addition, his critically acclaimed 2015 play The Audience, also starred Mirren as the Queen, and ultimately inspired this series.
