In documentary footage, Cameron Crowe talked about his real mother AND a recreation of her played by Frances McDormand being present on set. Since one scene would show multiple girls ganging up to take his virginity, he called the experience a "squirmer." But he stressed that the genuineness of it all probably contributed to the quality of the film.
