The official Star Trek Chronology suggests this film takes place in the year 2293, or 27 years after the events of the first episodes of Star Trek (1966), which the chronology suggests occur in 2266. This is taken from a line by McCoy stating he has served on the Enterprise for 27 years. According to the Chronology, Rotta verso l'ignoto (1991) therefore takes place about six years after the events of Star Trek V - L'ultima frontiera (1989), and some 20 years after the events of Star Trek (1979).
