When Truman reunites with his "father" and sobs, he isn't crying tears of joy. He's crying because he realizes that even the people he was closest to (Meryl, Marlon, and now the man he thought was his father) were lying to him and his whole life was a sham. In many ways, this is the catalyst that finally pushes Truman to escape his fabricated reality and reunite with his true love, Sylvia.
