After his breakthrough success in "The Graduate", and the subsequent big success of "Midnight Cowboy", Dustin Hoffman had hopes of being reunited with director Mike Nichols for this film, based on one of his favorite books. On discovering that his friend Alan Arkin (who had recommended him to Nichols for "The Graduate") had been cast as the hero, Yossarian, Hoffman set his sights instead on the role of Milo Minderbinder, and was rather shocked when Nichols countered by offering him the much smaller role of Lt. Orr; he suspected that Nichols had deliberately done this to humiliate him, and turned the part down. The role of Milo was eventually played by Hoffman's "Midnight Cowboy" co-star, Jon Voight.
