Benny Safdie's character, councilman Joel Wachs, is inspired in the real-life Joel Wachs, who for more of 30 years served as councilman in Los Angeles. He is credited in "special thanks" in the movie. His look in the movie, however, is inspired in Harvey Milk, which was played by Sean Penn (Jack Holden in this movie) in the biopic Milk (2008).
