For Elizabeth Shaw's abdominal surgery scene, a fake silicon body was attached to Noomi Rapace from the shoulders down. The small Trilobite in the amniotic sack that is pulled from her fake body was an animatronic creature wrapped in a condom filled with fake blood. A crew member punctured the condom with a razor (removed in post-production) so that the amniotic sack would explode violently. They experimented with amber and milky-colored fluid first to secure an R rating, but were eventually allowed to use a version with red blood. Stapling the wound afterwards was an idea by director Sir Ridley Scott.
