Supergirl was originally going to be a love interest for Superman. In the original treatments for Superman III (1983), she was unrelated to Superman and becomes the leading lady and the main romantic interest of the series; a stand-in for Lois who had just departed. In Supergirl - La ragazza d'acciaio (1984) though, it is revealed that they are indeed cousins.
