The characters of Bardolph, Nym, and Pistol were named after characters in "Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2", "Henry V", and "The Merry Wives of Windsor" by William Shakespeare. Shakespeare's Pistol, Nym, and Bardolph are soldiers fighting in another country who loot locals' houses and get punished for it, just as their Cold Mountain namesakes are.
