Writer and director Sergio Leone was influenced immensely by The Rifleman (1958), which was very popular at the time. Gian Maria Volontè as Ramón Rojo uses only a rifle and nothing else, much like Chuck Connors did on The Rifleman. Leone made his character a bad guy though.
