According to Jason Reitman, he envisioned the role of Callie with Carrie Coon in mind. This film is Coon's first comedic role, all of her previous roles are serious and dramatic. At one point, Reitman had self-doubts on whether Coon pull it off so he had to talk to every director that has worked with Coon previously before he was convinced to stick by his choice.
