When Doctor Who returned in 2005, fans had wrongly assumed that it was a reboot and that it ignored the classic series and the 1996 TV movie and that it took place in a new time-line. The show is a soft reboot and also a direct continuation of the classic series and the 1996 TV movie. However, if it had been a reboot and indeed set in a new timeline, Christopher Eccleston would had been the first Doctor and instead of leaving Gallifrey cos he was bored. The Doctor would had been left to roam time and space in the TARDIS following Gallifrey's destruction at the end of the Time War and Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) would be The Doctor's first companion to travel with him in the TARDIS and Christopher Eccleston's regeneration into David Tennant would had been the first time The Doctor had regenerated and instead of first encountering The Daleks on Skaro, The Daleks would be revealed as the alien race the Time Lords fought against in the Time War.
