In Fight Club (1999), another David Fincher movie, Edward Norton's character explains what how "Cigarette Burns" were used to mark a movie reel change as Brad Pitt's character points to them on screen. You can see one such "Cigarette Burn" after the end of the scene where Joseph Cross meets everyone in the office.
