The Giant's Wife has frequently been interpreted as a metaphor for the AIDS crisis, which was at its peak when the musical premiered on Broadway in 1987. However Stephen Sondheim denied this, stating 'If the Giant represented anything, it wouldn't be AIDS. The Giant is not a natural phenomenon but a force roused to vengeance by greed, prevarication and irresponsibility. It could just as easily be the atomic bomb, global warming or the economic meltdown [...] To James Lapine and me, it is a giant. Enough said.'
