Contrary to popular belief, Rutger Hauer (1944-2019) did not improvise the iconic 'tears in the rain' line. This was confirmed by Ridley Scott himself in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes in 2017. When asked by Michael Fassbender if he (Rutger Hauer) "came up with that little speech", Ridley Scott said, "Yes, he wrote it". Scott said that he initially thought that the actor had stolen the line, but Hauer convinced him that he hadn't, and also made Scott changed his mind to let him say the line for the film. The line "Time to die" really belongs to the scriptwriter Hampton Fancher.
