Paul Fix and DeForest Kelley had both previously portrayed chief medical officers of the USS Enterprise on Star Trek (1966). Fix played Dr. Piper in the pilot Star Trek: Where No Man Has Gone Before (1966), and was succeeded by Kelley's Dr. McCoy, aka "Bones," for the remainder of the series.
