Some viewers may think that Clarice was lucky that the FBI already had knowledge of Buffalo Bill's true identity and proof of his crimes, and that an arrest warrant had been issued for him prior to her entering his house in Ohio; if she had just stumbled upon his house without prior evidence or arrest warrant, discovered the kidnapping victim by accident and caught Bill alive, it might have been difficult to prosecute him without a search warrant on the Ohio house. However, contrary to popular belief, a search warrant is not always required; one exception is the Plain View principle, where an officer may conduct an immediate search of a private residence when they detect evidence of criminal behavior from a lawful vantage point. In this case, Jack Gordon invited Clarice inside the house to give her the phone number to Mrs. Lippman's son. There, she noted the very rare Death's-head moth, which was pretty strong evidence that Gordon was Buffalo Bill, and thus ample grounds for further investigation. The 'lucky' part in all this was that Gordon tried to get rid of Clarice by offering her the number to Mrs. Lippman's son; while legally inside the house, Gordon's nervous behavior and the disheveled state of the interior were her first clues that he had something to hide, and seeing the moth pretty much sealed the deal.
