The mini-series shares a number of similarities and story elements with the James Bond film Casino Royale (2006). The director of The Night Manager (2016), Susanne Bier, has previously worked with Mads Mikkelsen, the actor who played that movie's chief villain Le Chiffre, on two cinema movies, they being Open Hearts (2002) and Dopo il matrimonio (2006), the latter of which debuted in the same year as Casino Royale (2006).
