It reportedly took many years for Sergio Leone to secure the rights to Harry Grey's book "The Hoods", on which this film was based, because another producer, Dan Curtis, held the rights, and wasn't willing to give them up. So in 1976, Leone turned to producer Alberto Grimaldi, who persuaded Curtis to give up the rights in exchange for Grimaldi financing Ballata macabra (1976), a replacement movie starring Oliver Reed and Bette Davis.
