The fictional ocean liner SS Virginian in this film had a similar career to the real-life third liner in Cunard's grand trio, the RMS Aquitania, sister ship to the Lusitania and Mauretania. Her maiden voyage was in 1914. She served as a hospital ship/troop transport in World War I and as a passenger liner during the 1920s and 30s. She served again as a troop transport during World War II. She was scrapped in 1950. She was the last of the celebrated four-funneled liners.
