Three important rules for writing the series were: 1.) "No flights, No tights" which became part of the marketing pitch, this dictated that Clark Kent would not wear the Superman costume, nor would he fly.2.) Clark could never directly kill anyone. This rule created a dilemma since Clark must be able to defeat the "bad guys" from week to week. A solution developed in later episodes with the introduction of the Belle Reve sanitarium (Belle Reve is a Federal prison for metahumans and other supervillains in the comics).3.) No scenes of Clark Kent or his friends sitting in a classroom at a desk as it would look strange to have Tom Welling, who was 24-25 in the first season sat in a school classroom.
