The massive indoor set, was up to that time, the largest indoor set in Paramount's history. It could be lit to simulate any time of day, and had its own drainage system for rain scenes. Two main cameras were used to film it. One was the camera used in James Stewart's apartment behind from which Alfred Hitchcock directed. The other main camera was mounted on a crane to film just outside the windows for scenes when Stewart is watching through binoculars or a telephoto lens. To synchronize with the actions on the immediate set, Hitchcock gave directions to the actors in the remote apartments via radio.
