Gene Roddenberry's original scripts for the pilot, Star Trek: The Next Generation: Encounter at Farpoint (1987), did not include any scenes set in the Enterprise's engine room. When he learned that Paramount Pictures was therefore refusing to pay to build an engine room set, he revised the scripts to include the engine room.
