According to Rob Reiner, he'd had a conversation with the late Penny Marshall regarding the transforming robots scene. She said that she wanted to add that scene as she'd just finished a BBC documentary on insects, and thought it would be a great addition if "Josh" would bring up "bugs that turn into robots". The additional actor's dialogue afterward is completely ad-libbed.
