While the producers originally wanted Drew Barrymore to play Sidney in the movie, Barrymore was unable to due to other commitments, but she insisted on playing the role of Casey due to her death at the start of the movie. She believed if she plays the role of Casey and the audience see her get killed, it will make them believe anything can happen in the movie due to Barrymore being a popular household name at the time for her many roles in famous movies.
