The character of Mackey is a composite of several notorious serial killers of the era the film is based. First, Mackey has a police background just like that of the real life Golden State Killer. Second, his Volkswagen Beetle used to commit the crimes closely resembles that of the one used by Ted Bundy. Thirdly, with the most overlap is Mackey's modus operandi as it parallels that of John Wayne Gacy.
