The opening credits state that the series is "based on characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster." However, neither of Superman's creators had any involvement with the creation of Supergirl, who made her first appearance in Action Comics #252 (May 1959). The creators of Supergirl were Otto Binder and Al Plastino. Other than Superman himself, the only characters created by Siegel and Shuster to appear in the series are James Olsen, Lois Lane and Lex Luthor, though Siegel co-created Brainiac 5 with Jim Mooney.
