In 1792, Marie Antoinette declined an offer of an alliance by the general Charles François Dumouriez (1739-1823), who had recently become one of the leaders of the Girondins (the then-dominant political faction). She did not trust his intentions. In part due to his support for the royal family, Dumouriez became a target for radical political opponents in 1793. He chose to defect to the Austrian forces to avoid being arrested.
