Burkittsville, Maryland, where the film's plot is set, received its official name in 1828. It was previously called "Harley's Post Office". The village is named after its co-founder Henry Burkitt. Burkitt and Major Joshua Harley had established the village in 1824, but Harley died a few years later and leadership was left to Burkitt.
