Jeff Goldblum earned the part of Ed due to his role in Il grande freddo (1983) where the studio had looked to cast Tom Berenger or Kevin Kline. After neither were available they settled on Goldblum, whose performance John Landis, after re-watching The Big Chill, particularly liked (Goldblum is overall the dry comic relief in The Big Chill, and without trying).
