The film accurately depicts that vocalist/bassist Tim Staffell left Smile to join a band called "Humpy Bong." The band was founded by ex-The Bee Gees Australian drummer Colin Petersen and Irish folk-rock singer Jonathan Kelly. The band name is a two-word variation of the name of a school Petersen attended in Australia. Despite its early promise based on the industry connections of Petersen and the talent of frontman Kelly, the band only released one single, performed twice on Top of the Pops (1964), and never played a single live gig. Staffell retired for the most part from music in the late 1970s. He had a second career focusing on model making and animation, working on projects such as The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1981) and Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends (1984).
