In an interview published in Star Wars Insider issue 207 (December 2021), Dominic Monaghan reveals that the first script he received for the film was dramatically different. Even when he was shooting his first scenes, Emperor Palpatine was not in the script. When he came back for re-shoots, there were rumors that Palpatine would return, but J.J. Abrams remained very hush-hush about it and told Monaghan it would be better for him to wait and be surprised by the finished film.
