In the extended edition, Saruman told Gandalf "your love of the Halflings' leaf has clearly slowed your mind." The irony is that Saruman was said in the books to love Longbottom leaf so much that he imported it all the way from the Shire, which was why Merry and Pippin found it in his storehouse in "The Two Towers" extended edition (2003).
