Originally Academy Award nominee Thomas Newman was going to score this film when the film was slated to be released in Fall 1994. However, when editing problems on the film caused a serious delay, Newman had requested his release to leave the project because he agreed to score a Western film that had just come up and didn't want to miss the opportunity to write an Aaron Copland style score to his excitement. Director Damien Harris was disappointed but agreed to let him go from the film on good terms because they had a great relationship on Deceived. After looking around for another composer, Harris was attracted to Carter Burwell, who had scored films for the Coen brothers and came up with the smokey jazz score that ended up in the film.
