George C. Scott, who was a truly brilliant actor was dissatisfied with the film. Kubrick wanted him to overact but Scott was very serious about his art. What Kubrick did was have Scott do a couple of serious takes and then do a take that was over-the-top. The latter were the takes Kubrick wanted in the first place and that he used for the film. In any case, this film made Scott a star and paved the way for many triumphs to come.
