Source author Jon Cleary did not originally intend to write another novel featuring his Scobie Malone character after "The High Commissioner" (1966). Cleary wanted to write a book involving the then being constructed new Sydney Opera House and felt that another Scobie Malone book would be the way to go about it. That novel was "Helga's Web" (1970) which later was adapted into this 1975 feature film.
