Cuba Gooding Jr. plays Doris 'Dorie' Miller, the first African-American to be awarded the Navy Cross. Gooding played another Naval figure who had a historic first, in Men of Honor - L'onore degli uomini (2000). He portrayed Carl Brashear, the first African-American diver in the history of the Navy, who also went on to become a Master Diver.
