For the first season of SNL there was a regular segment featuring Jim Henson's Muppets. The sketches revolved around "The Land Of Gorch," a fantasy world populated by monstrous Muppets purposely designed to be nothing like the "cute" Muppets of Sesame Street. (Lorne Michaels and Jim Henson shared a manager, Bernie Brillstein)Despite their shared irreverence for the conventions of TV, the Muppet performers did not get along with the SNL cast or writers. The cast resented the Muppets for taking up valuable airtime, and the writers considered having to do the segments a chore. (Michael O'Donoghue cynically declared "I don't write for felt.") For their part the Muppet performers found the SNL writers delivered cheap situation comedy sketches. As well, the Henson crew was slightly older and more settled than the SNL writers.By the end of the season it was clear that the arrangement wasn't working, but Michaels was reluctant to pull the plug, later saying "how do you fire the Muppets?" Fortunately, Michaels was given a way out when Henson made a deal with ITV for The Muppet Show. Frequent SNL host Steve Martin and Brillstein client Gilda Radner later appeared on The Muppet Show. The darker, uglier Muppet universe created for The Land Of Gorch later influenced Henson's movie The Dark Crystal.
