Lucille Ball was initially unwilling to involve herself in the production of a new weekly television show in 1962. During the spring of 1961, she was suffering from the combined effects of a viral infection and chronic fatigue. On April 22, Ball collapsed on stage during a theatrical performance. She had consequently taken a months-long hiatus from performing, and afterwards avoided work that required intense effort on her part. Her business partner Desi Arnaz had to convince her that "The Lucy Show" was necessary for the financial health of Desilu Productions.
