When Richard Hell was asked to star in this film, he did some research on the director Ulli Lommel and screened La tenerezza del lupo (1973) which he felt was a brilliant film and so jumped at the chance to work with the genius behind the film. Then as the shoot for Blank Generation went on and it was becoming an increasingly miserable mess, Richard started to realize that maybe he had been wrong about Lommel. He checked Tenderness of the Wolves again and it became clear why that film was a success, it wasn't because of Lommel, it was because of Kurt Raab and Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
