The atmosphere of racism and sexism in the film was representational of the era and a number of incidents depicted are not based on specific testament, as expected in a film based on a true story but not a documentary. When NACA was transformed into NASA in 1958 the atmosphere was focused on the work yet there were white staff with objections to desegregation. There was a complaint about a black woman using the ladies room but it was not taken further. The scene of the sign being torn down was a fiction.
